Cost of Living in USA for Indian Students

For an international student, the cost of living in the United States is generally higher in the Northeast or East than in the Midwest. The cost of living in America for a year can be calculated using factors such as a hostel or off-campus housing, food, healthcare, groceries and eating out expenses, entertainment, and travel.

The monthly cost of living in the United States is approximately $700-$1000 (INR 52328 – 74755), equating to $10000-$12000 (INR 747550 – 897060) each year. The payments cover everything from accommodation and board to transportation, textbooks, and other extras.

    Accommodation Costs in the USA

The next stage in calculating the cost of living in the United States for international students is to factor in housing. For international students, most American institutions provide on-campus accommodation, which is undoubtedly the less expensive option. You might be able to live in an apartment close to your school. In the United States, the annual cost of living ranges from $6000 to $12000 [4,40,000 to 8,80,000 INR]. International students who live close to the school may choose to live in a homestay or with local guardians or relatives to save money.

Cost of Food in the USA

International students’ food costs in the United States may vary depending on their lifestyle and eating habits. A student living on campus may choose the option of meals when filling out the housing paperwork. A hostel student’s food budget would be roughly USD 250, which would cover three meals in the hostel mess each day.

Off-campus students, whether in dorms or on the outskirts of school, are responsible for their own food expenses and groceries. Food costs might range from USD 100 to USD 200 depending on the state. Walmart, Target, Costco, and Trader Joe’s are among the most affordable grocery stores.

Average Electricity Bill/Internet bill in the USA

Electricity, cell phone, and internet bills are among the other expenses that international students must cope with. Working part-time in a fast-food restaurant or a grocery shop can easily meet these requirements. Most international students choose to work part-time while studying to help with their finances.

    Transportation Costs in the USA

Passes can be used to use public transit like buses and metros. A monthly public transit pass might cost anywhere from USD 40 to USD 100, depending on the state. International students can also book advance aircraft tickets to return home or to the United States. Because the states are so well connected, traveling across the country is exceedingly straightforward and efficient. International students have access to buses, bicycles, taxis, trains, and subways, among other modes of public transportation.

Additional Cost to Live in the USA

When studying in the United States, students should be able to cover the following expenses. Inflation and other external variables may cause costs to rise by 5–7% every year.

    • Expenses for travel between India and the United States during vacation periods
    • Large purchases, such as a computer, furniture, or even a rented automobile, are examples of large purchases.
    • Dental care, eye care, and aesthetic procedures are examples of medical expenses not covered by health insurance.
    • Additional summer expenses – housing and board, grocery costs during the months when schools are not offered in the United States
    • Off-campus transportation, for example, is an additional cost.
    • Weekend vacations, entertainment, and social outings

International students must apply for a student visa after obtaining their acceptance letters. You must register with the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) and pay the $350 fee after being accepted by a college accredited by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (25,664 INR). International students must then apply for and pay for a $160 student visa (11,732 INR).
