The Rhodes Scholarship is the oldest international scholarship program (first given in 1902) and allows excellent young people worldwide to study at the University of Oxford. Young leaders who dynamically utilize their abilities for the welfare of the world are eligible for the scholarship. More information on the Rhodes scholarship eligibility, selection, and application procedures can be found on the blog.
What is Rhodes Scholarship?
After the death of Cecil Rhodes, an entrepreneur, and imperialist, in 1902, the Rhodes Scholarship was established, making it the oldest and perhaps most renowned of the international fellowships. By bringing together scholars from all over the world to study at Oxford, Rhodes “dreamed of transforming the world.” These scholars would return to their villages, bettered by their education and exposure to one another, ready to wage the good fight.
Rhodes Scholarships are accessible to citizens of a wide range of nations, including the United States. Students should apply through their country of citizenship or permanent residence if they are eligible. The Rhodes Global Scholarship is only available to students who are not qualified to use it in any other way.
The Rhodes Scholarship Selection Committee is seeking exceptional young leaders who are eager to engage in global concerns and promote international understanding and peace. In short, the Selection Committee looks for young people with exceptional intelligence, character, leadership, and service dedication, as well as a great potential to emerge as “leaders for the world’s future.”
What does Rhodes Scholarship Cover?
The Rhodes Scholarship pays for tuition at Oxford University as well as an annual stipend. The stipend for the 2022/23 academic year is £17,310 per year (£1,442.50 per month), from which Scholars must cover all living expenses, including housing. Please keep in mind that this does not cover partners or dependents.
The detailed Conditions of Tenure document outlines the permitted combinations of degrees as well as how many years of study are covered by the Scholarship, as the latter is dependent on course choice – for example, Scholars who choose to pursue a DPhil (Ph.D.) at Oxford can receive up to three years of fees and stipend.
The Rhodes Trust will compensate the application fee to study at the University of Oxford if you are selected for the Scholarship. The Trust will cover the cost of a student visa as well as the International Health Surcharge (IHS), which allows international students to use the NHS in the UK. For the start and finish of their studies in Oxford, the Rhodes Trust will pay two economy class flights to and from the UK.
Scholars get a settling-in allowance upon arriving in Oxford, and those who transition to the second course of study in Oxford will receive further aid to cover the fee for visa renewal and IHS application.
To be eligible for a Rhodes Scholarship, a candidate must meet all of the following criteria:

Selection Criteria for the Rhodes Scholarship

The candidate’s academic excellence is the primary criterion for selection.
Candidates that showcase unity and teamwork in any area, such as dance, sports, singing, debate, drama, writing, painting, or any other discipline, will be given preference.
Candidates with desirable soft qualities such as honesty, sympathy, and protection for the poor and vulnerable, benevolence, selflessness, and so on will have a better chance of being chosen.
Candidates that are dedicated to improving the world’s worrying conditions by inspiring others through exceptional actions.
The Selection Committee makes the final decision on the candidates after reviewing the application form and supporting papers. There is no consideration given to the candidate’s financial situation or background. See how you can become a Rhodes Scholar by looking at the selection process:
The candidates are first shortlisted, and then the interview phase is used to make the final decision. If the candidate is not already in India, the personal interview and preliminary session will take place in New Delhi or by video call/telephone. Both sessions are crucial, and candidates will be shortlisted depending on their performance in these rounds.
Following that, the shortlisted candidates are invited to a social engagement (a tea or dinner event with the selection committee hosted by the Chairman) and the final interview round.
The selection committee will send an email to the chosen candidates after they have made their final choice.
The Rhodes scholarship is only confirmed after a successful application to the University of Oxford.
